Odd Folk is a modular game. At its core, its a series of actions that players (including the GM) can use to introduce unexpected narrative developments into the fiction they are co-creating. The game is organized into kits (a collection of actions) to help you choose what kind of stories you want to tell and what kind of flavour you want to focus on. Kits are contained bundles of mechanical support connected by a theme.

A Game of compounding consequences.

In Oddfolk, success and failure is not what’s at stake when you roll. Each time a player rolls, they select one or more options from a picklist, depending on the result. Rolling a 1 is often the best/simplest result, as only one choice is needed. Beyond that the results become incrementally more complicated as more details are added.

For example, the Seance action from the Witches + Warlocks kit reads:

Seance
Commune with the occult for guidance and understanding.

Something unwelcome answers your call
You receive a true answer to one question
The Spirits remember your name
You become marked

A player who rolls a 2 might pick "Something unwelcome answers your call" and "You receive a true answer to one question".  It becomes the groups responsibility to determine what story development fulfills both of those criteria.

The Kits

Kits are a collection of between 5 and 8 actions. Included in the game are kits covering a variety of genres and circumstances:

Fantasy Basics, Magic, Combat, Witches + Warlocks, Drollery, Common People and Group Hug by Me

Spooky Gardening and Ghostbusting by Kait Tremblay

Speculative Fancies and Weird Items by Aaron King

Artifact Crafting and Slasher Horror by Christian Sorrell

Itchfunding and PWYW

Originally, I was going to kickstart this game. While I was trying to figure out the logistics for shipping a physical project some idiot decided to make the prospect of delivering goods across certain borders very stressful. It made me reconsider what my goals were with releasing this game and really I just want people to PLAY IT!

So, I'm still producing the physical zine, because it does something I think it real cool with it's modularity. I'm hiring some very fun folks to make some extra content, because I think they are real cool.  And, I'm releasing the digital version for pay-what-you-want, because I want anyone who is interested to be able play it.

I'm also working to make a web interface that will help assemble the specific parts of your game and give you a print at home version. This will hopefully translate some of the coolness of the modularity of the game to the digital version of the game.

When the game reaches $1000 and when all the components are done, I will order the print run and start physical fulfillment.

Where the game is at

It's mostly done! I'm laying it out and giving it a couple editing passes, so the pdf here might change a little. I've printed proofs and they look great.  The cool people are working on their kits which wont take long. The first draft of the PDF is out now, and I'll add to it as more comes in. The web interface is in progress and should be done within a couple weeks.

The content is the same yeah! I just call it HotDog cause it's intended to be folded longways.

ahahahaha I love that! :D

anyways, i really dig this. what is the license attribution for it btw?

Ohhh great question! I'm a CC-BY 4.0 person, I will try and remember to throw that in the laid out docs.

I'm very intrigued by the concept. It takes the PbtA philosophy to a completly different place, and I like it there! A really cool game.

I was wondering though: there is an example in the text, of a character without any violent actions in his Kits who ends up having to face violence, and I asked myself what that would look like. How does that player/character engage with the situation (or with any other high stakes circumstance that they don't have a corresponding action for)?

This is honestly one of my favourite potential questions a group will have to tackle. Obviously the actions the player does have at their disposal will greatly affect what nonviolent response they want to take. Skulking away, making a pact with a supernatural being or even trying to ingest something are all gonna produce distinct and weird moments.

I do think it's probably important to let players know if a GM plans to throw a lot of potential combat at them when they are making characters so they can choose their tools correctly.

Thank you for the reply. I'm looking forward to see how it turns out in play.

This is cool!! I'm a sucker for a picklist, and I love the mechanism of adding options to picklists. Cool stuff, I'll try get it to my table!

Thank you! I hope you have a great time with it! I'm also obviously a huge pick list fan :)

Hi, great looking game. Could you clarify the Group Actions, I'm not sure I fully understand. I think it refers to the Group Hug kit only, correct? Maybe an example would help or just some added reference in that paragraph to what the roll refers to. Thanks!

I can totally try and clarify that! The group rolls 2d4 and dedicates one of those to each of the picklists in the roll. It's basically just a double action, with a little more consensus based decision making. Currently the only group actions are in the group hug kit but there will be more in some of the kits that haven't released yet, which might help show them off.

How do actions with fewer than 4 possibilities work? (Consult the lore, Ingest, Carouse impact) There is so few outliers that it feels like a mistake, but I guess we could not add anything more past 2 or 3.

(Regarding editing, some sentences (like the description of each action) have final punctuation marks, others don't).
(Wonderful layout btw!)

They are totally mistakes in layout that I didn't catch, gonna fix and re-upload the PDFs today. Thanks for letting me know, very happy to catch these before going to print!

I loved the zine, could you tell me the name of the font used in the titles?

Sure thing! The two fonts are Pandemonium (headers) and Slackers (Title).
